Five Signs That Your Friends Might Irish Goodbye You This St. Patrick's Day
Lyft Finds That Ridesharing is the Millennial Escape for Leaving Without Saying Goodbye
NEW YORK, March 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Has your friend ever told you they were going to the bathroom only to never return? Did you and your girlfriends leave one bar to go to another and end up with one less friend than you started with? Have you ever been out and your friend left without saying goodbye?
If so, chances are you may have been the victim of an Irish Goodbye, when a person discreetly leaves a bar, party, or dinner without telling anyone. But you're not alone and it's likely you may not be the only one this St. Patrick's Day with friends that leave without saying anything at all.
Lyft recently surveyed one-thousand people and uncovered that Irish Goodbyes are more common than previously thought – so much so that three out of four people have at least one friend that is notorious for frequent Irish Goodbyes. What's more is that if you are celebrating with your best guy friends, they are more likely to unexpectedly leave you at a bar compared to your girl friends. And while it could definitely be a sign of an Irish Goodbye if your friend opens up their Lyft app but hasn't yet said their goodbye to the group (22 percent of millennials are likely to hop in a rideshare as they make their getaway), Lyft uncovered a few sure fire covers prone to be used by those who leave without saying goodbye.
Five Signs That Your Friend Has Given You The Irish Goodbye
- After dancing to your favorite song you look around but your friend is nowhere to be found
- Once you make it to your third bar of the night you realize that your group is missing a few people
- Your friend says they have to take a call, only to step outside and never return
- A bathroom run almost always ends up in texting "Girl, where did you go?!"
- Your friend leaves to close out their tab at the last bar leaving you feeling ghosted
However, it's not just our friends that have mastered the art of Irish Goodbyes. While many people have at least one friend that's infamous for leaving without saying goodbye, more than 2 in 5 people, including half of Millennials, frequently leave a bar or social gathering without saying goodbye to anyone. In case you plan on being one of the offenders, here's how you can you make your escape this St. Patrick's Day.
Make The Perfect Irish Goodbye With These Five Tips
- Don't leave your Irish Goodbye up for chance. Schedule your ride like the thousands of people who did it last St. Patrick's Day
- Sneaking out of the bar with a few of your closest friends? Make sure they pay their fair share
- Based on Lyft data, leaving at either 8:00 pm or 11:00 pm increases your chances for a quick exit
- On the flip side, avoid leaving at 7:00 pm or 10:00 pm to reduce your chances of being caught
- The best Irish Goodbye ends with a late night bite, stop at your favorite bodega or take out spot before heading home

Methodology
The Lyft Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) among 1,000 U.S. St. Patrick's Day celebrants ages 21+, defined as those who plan to celebrate St. Patrick's Day 2018 at a bar or restaurant. The survey was conducted between March 6 and March 9, 2018, using an email invitation and an online survey.
Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
