Fitango joins the fight for Diabetes Alert Day - and encourages Americans to get walking with the Orthaheel and Dr. Andrew Weil Integrative Footwear 2nd Annual Walkabout, a 28-Day Quest for Good Health
NEW YORK, March 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Today marks the 25th annual American Diabetes Association Alert Day, a day in which Americans are encouraged to evaluate their risk of diabetes and learn how to take the necessary steps to avoid this highly preventable disease. To mark the 25th anniversary of this crucial public health initiative, collaborative e-health platform Fitango is releasing two comprehensive free Actionplans. One is aimed at helping Americans to prevent Type 2 diabetes and the other helps diabetics to better manage their condition.
The "Preventing Type 2 Diabetes" Actionplan, designed by top nutritionist Taryn Schubert, is a comprehensive and powerful diabetes prevention instrument. Schubert provides recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and even dessert; each recipe includes at least one ingredient, which is known to help prevent diabetes in pre-diabetic or non-diabetic people. "Controlling Type 2 Diabetes" combines a delicious, diabetes-safe meal plan with tips and trackers for monitoring blood glucose levels and overall wellness. Both Actionplans allow users to invite family and friends as their motivators, strengthening their commitment with social support and accountability.
Because healthy eating must be combined with exercise to optimize a diabetes prevention or management plan, these Actionplans also include tips that gently motivate users to develop an active lifestyle through walking. This part of the Actionplan is produced in collaboration with a second crucial public health initiative, the 2013 Walkabout, a 28-day quest for good health, with Orthaheel and Dr. Andrew Weil Integrative Footwear. The Walkabout, which begins on April 3rd, National Walking Day, encourages people around the globe to commit to walking just thirty minutes a day, in order to attain physical and emotional well-being.
"As the rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes continue to soar in the United States, Fitango's diabetes prevention Actionplan coupled with the 2013 Walkabout could not have come at a better time," said Phillip Vasyli, podiatrist and founder of Orthaheel and the Vasyli footwear brands. "In light of a recent study showing that too much time spent sitting could increase the odds for type 2 diabetes, we're excited to empower the public to make simple lifestyle improvements, such as walking, for better overall health and well-being."
By raising awareness for Diabetes Alert Day and the 28-Day Walkabout, Fitango hopes to fight a growing epidemic. According to the American Diabetes Association, 79 million Americans are pre-diabetic, and a startlingly high number of pre-diabetic and diabetic Americans are completely unaware of their condition. On Diabetes Alert Day, all Americans are encouraged to take a diabetes risk test, available through the National Institute of Health, to assess their condition.
"The more people who take this first step in knowing their risk, the closer we will become to stopping this disease that has reached epidemic proportions," says Lurulean B. Gaines, RN, MSN, President of Health Care and Education for the American Diabetes Association. "The time to act is now. Taking one quick minute to learn your risk today could lead to a much healthier tomorrow."
Through Fitango, pre-diabetic and diabetic Americans can not only assess their diabetes risk, but learn to ward off and manage the illness using Fitango's unique, interactive, and easy-to-use Actionplan format. In order to be as effective as possible in raising awareness of this growing epidemic and the simple steps that can be taken to fight it, Fitango is offering this Actionplan free of charge until April 1.
