Attended by more than 700 parents, educators and students, the Generation Mobile Forum set out to address the opportunities and challenges associated with an increase in technology usage amongst adolescences. Beginning with a presentation given by FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowski, the forum moved to highlight LG Mobile Phones' LG Text Ed program. LG Text Ed is a comprehensive educational campaign for parents that addresses teen mobile phone misuse, and provides consumers with valuable resources so they can teach responsible phone use to their children. The event included a special Skype™ appearance by award-winning actress Jane Lynch - the newest member of the LG Text Ed council. Lynch, who stars in a series of comedic vignettes for the program, which can be viewed on www.LGTextEd.com, is currently working with the mobile phone manufacturer to raise awareness about risky mobile phone behaviour. Lynch answered questions about her role in the LG Text Ed program as well as debuted the latest vignette in the video series.
The forum also featured two panel discussions, the first of which consisted of local high school students, parents and educators, discussing topics ranging from how kids are using mobile phones today to issues of mobile bullying and sexting. The second panel included industry professionals taking questions via Twitter®, the web and the audience regarding various issues faced by children, parents and educators in the age of technology. Taking all perspectives into account, the forum nurtured a conversation that will hopefully extend beyond the discussion and into the realms of education and promotion of responsible mobile phone usage to this generation and the next.
"Mobile technology is shining a bright new light on how we communicate with each other and there's no reason for parents to be in the dark about it," said Rosalind Wiseman, forum moderator and LG Text Ed advisory council member. "The Generation Mobile Forum proved that by creating an open dialogue between adults and adolescents, we can better understand the opportunities and challenges surrounding kids' mobile usage, as well as find concrete solutions that will help educate and empower parents."
LG Text Ed with Jane Lynch
Bringing her trademark intensity and flair to the LG Text Ed campaign, award-winning actress Jane Lynch is working with LG Mobile Phones to raise awareness about risky mobile phone behavior. In a series of comedic vignettes, which can be viewed on www.LGTextEd.com, Lynch tackles issues such as sexting, texting while driving, mobile bullying, and other questionable teen behaviors. At the end of each video, Lynch directs parents to LGTextEd.com where they can find professional advice and guidance to help promote safe and responsible usage among their text- and tech-savvy families. Each video encourages parents to "face the facts" and "send the message" to their children that risky mobile phone behavior is unacceptable and can even be dangerous. Lynch, a new mom herself, masterfully employs her artistic abilities and the result is a video series that is both humorous and thought-provoking.
LG Text Ed
The LG Text Ed program, which was launched earlier this year, offers parents a number of articles, tips, videos, and other content so they can educate themselves on the dangers of mobile phone misuse; employ strategies to help protect their children from potential problems, and discover how they might be modeling their children's mobile phone behavior.
Other LG Text Ed Advisory Council members include Rosalind Wiseman, best-selling author of Queen Bees and Wannabees (the basis for the 2004 hit film, Mean Girls); Dr. Charles Sophy, Medical Director for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, and author of Side by Side; and Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and bully coach, and author of Bullyproof Your Child for Life.
