LONDON, ON, Aug. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - Fanshawe College's Board of Governors today announced that Peter Devlin (Lieutenant General Retired), the former Commander of the Canadian Army, will become the College's fifth President, effective September 3, 2013.
Known to live at the front line and respected for his wisdom, balanced approach, and collaborative style, Devlin is an extraordinarily effective leader who has had a distinguished, 35-year career with the Armed Forces. During that time, he has commanded troops in Canada, Europe, the Middle East and the United States.
He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Cross as well as Orders of Military Merit from the United States, Brazil and Colombia for international leadership and partnership. Devlin was appointed Commander of the Canadian Order of Military Merit in 2010 and selected Commander of the Canadian Army where he led 50,000 regular, reserve, and civilian members; managed an annual budget of $2 billion and infrastructure worth $10 billion, and worked tirelessly to reposition and modernize the Army to meet the needs of an ever-changing future.
"We are excited to have Peter Devlin as the next President of Fanshawe College," says Crispin Colvin, Chair, Fanshawe College Board of Governors. "The Board of Governors was struck by Peter's unquestionable leadership abilities, his integrity, and his experience in managing with difficult budgetary constraints. Peter has made a career of leading and motivating people, and preparing them for the future - areas in which Fanshawe also excels."
"This is a great selection and appointment of Lieutenant General Peter Devlin as Fanshawe College's President," says General Walter Natynczyk, President of the Canadian Space Agency and former Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Forces. "You have chosen a leader with great wisdom, experience and someone who really cares about people."
A graduate of The University of Western Ontario, where he studied Economics, Devlin earned his Masters degree in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. He has also studied at the Canadian Forces Staff School, the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College, the Canadian Forces College, and Queen's University.
"I am very pleased to be joining Fanshawe and look forward to bringing my team-oriented leadership experience to a new challenge in the post-secondary sector," says Devlin. "I am keen to help Fanshawe meet the challenges of continued growth and success for the future. With a focus on practical, applied, skills-based learning, the value of a College education is more important than ever before."
"Lieutenant General (Retired) Devlin's appointment is a landmark event at Fanshawe College and more broadly in the academic sector," says Hari Panday, former president, ICICI Bank Canada and Corporate Director. "His leadership is bound to bring about strategic changes founded in his deep insights, global networks, domestic and international relationships, and a level of teamwork not seen before."
Devlin is 53 years old and has been married for 29 years. He and his wife Judy have four children: John, Laura, Paul and Mark.
Devlin replaces Dr. Howard Rundle, who will step down August 30, after serving 17 years as President.
