Small Business Expo Ignites Entrepreneurial Spark on Both Sides of the Border
CHICAGO, May 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Chicago will host the second edition of Expo Mexico Emprende, an initiative of the Mexican government with the potential to be a game changer for Mexicans on both sides of the border. Looking to capitalize on remittances, Mexico's second highest source of income, the initiative aims to ignite the entrepreneurial spark in Mexicans living abroad and in their country of origin. EXPO MEXICO EMPRENDE 2012, is a free, three-day interactive conference that will bring together in one place and at one time, a plethora of government programs designed to help Mexicans start and grow businesses.
Keynote speakers will include business and community leaders from diverse sectors including: Former United States Treasurer Rosario Marin, Boxer Ricardo "El Finito" Lopez and notable actor and director, Alfonso Arau.
An impressive list of topics will be presented in plenary sessions including, how to navigate the current economic climate and innovation as a key business strategy. A full schedule of workshops will cover such topics as, financing, marketing, starting or growing businesses in the areas of high tech, green businesses, aerospace, franchising with more than 500 Mexican and American companies participating, business matchmaking and the basics on how to start a business.
According to the U.S. Census Office, of the 50.5 million Latinos living in the U.S., 59 percent are of Mexican origin. This group not only contributes with their work to the development of the American economy but also contributes through their remittances to the Mexican economy. These remittances are the second highest source of income for Mexico. According to the Bank of Mexico, $6.97 billion in remittances were received in 2011. The challenge is that 60 percent goes to consumption, 15 percent goes to savings and only three percent goes to creating small business that are the main creators of jobs.
The Secretary of Economy reports there are more than four million micro, small and medium businesses in Mexico that represent 99.8 percent of all businesses that generate 78.5 percent of the jobs and bring in 52 percent of the gross national product.
