Excelero and Mellanox Win Flash Memory Summit 2018 Best of Show Award for teuto.net Customer Implementation
Joint solution provides exceptional performance, low-latency in the OpenStack cloud; driving growth in analytics, machine learning, AI where demanding databases need matching storage performance
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Excelero, a disruptor in software-defined block storage, announced that its NVMesh® storage solution was named a 2018 Best of Show award winner at the Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara last night. Excelero was recognized along with Mellanox for providing the Most Innovative Flash Memory Customer Implementation at service provider teuto.net, which offers both public and private OpenStack clouds. Teuto.net deployed Excelero's NVMesh™ Server SAN on the Boston Flash-IO Talyn server along with Mellanox SN2100 switches to enable exceptional performance with low-latency block storage in its teutoStack Cloud.
Together Excelero and Mellanox enabled teuto.net to achieve 10x lower IO latency and a 2,000% performance gain with NVMesh compared to Ceph while avoiding costly, less-scalable appliances and proprietary vendor solutions.

teuto.net found Ceph to be durable, scalable and fast for most uses, but with low-latency workloads like databases, Ceph's performance lagged. The Excelero/Mellanox combination delivered uncompromised performance for all apps, including 8,000 IOPS per virtual machine for its teutoStack private cloud offering, compared to 400 IOPS per VM with Ceph. In addition, due to its design Ceph typically runs at higher latencies of up to 2.5 milliseconds - latency which degrades IOPS performance, especially at low queue lengths. Excelero achieved 10x lower IO Latency - around 250 microseconds - through all layers in the virtual machine. The deployment, done with the help of system integrator Boston Server & Storage Solutions GmbH, positioned teuto.net to drive growth in analytics, machine learning and AI, where demanding databases require matching storage performance. "OpenStack solutions have become a popular way to deploy, control and manage large pools of compute, networking and storage resources," said Jay Kramer, Chairman of the Awards Program and President of Network Storage Advisors Inc. "We are proud to select Excelero and Mellanox for the Best of Show Innovation Award as it delivered the highest levels of NVMe performance for the service provider needs at teuto.net."
"Demanding Cloud-as-a-Service infrastructure and platform deployments need more than just performance from Ethernet switches today," said John F. Kim, director, storage marketing at Mellanox Technologies. "They also need easy automation and management to build scalable Ethernet Storage Fabrics. After trying another switch vendor which failed to meet these key requirements, the Mellanox SN2100 was an obvious choice. We make it easy to integrate our switches with Linux operations, so service providers like teuto.net.net can keep their focus on running their business and not running their infrastructure."
"Few vendors can deliver what's needed for high-performance storage in hardware-agnostic infrastructures as data centers move away toward software-defined architectures, and especially for OpenStack," said Lior Gal, CEO and co-founder of Excelero. "We're honored to have helped teuto.net set a solid foundation for business growth, and to win a coveted FMS Best of Show award for the second year in a row."
