Exar Delivers Second Generation Data Deduplication for Application and Nearline Storage
BitWackr(TM) Offers Data Deduplication for Linux and Windows NAS and Strategic Microsoft Applications including SharePoint, Exchange and Data Protection Manager
FREMONT, Calif., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Exar Corporation (Nasdaq: EXAR) today delivered the second generation of its BitWackr Data Deduplication technology offering enhanced performance and data reduction for application and nearline data for incorporation into servers and storage appliances. The new BitWackr B1605R delivers inline, block-level deduplication, compression, encryption, and thin provisioning for both Linux and Windows NAS appliances and strategic Microsoft applications, including SharePoint, Exchange and Data Protection Manager. The BitWackr B1605R also supports both Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and 2008 environments.
A great deal of effort has been spent developing solutions that optimize disk-based backup storage capacity using data deduplication technology. As customers have implemented these solutions they have realized increased storage efficiencies and reduced operating expenses. Now, with enabling technologies such as the BitWackr B1605R, the industry is shifting its attention toward developing advanced data reduction solutions for application and nearline storage.
"Deduplicating data on primary storage is bound to become the defacto way that organizations store data on all tiers of storage as the benefits of data deduplication become more clearly understood and the technology itself matures," said Jerome M. Wendt, DCIG lead analyst and President. "Exar's inline BitWackr Data Deduplication was already out in front of this curve and now, with the availability of its BitWackr B1650R, more organizations can seamlessly take advantage of the cost benefits that data deduplication provides for an even greater percentage of their corporate data."
With application and nearline capacity costing far more per terabyte than backup-to-disk storage, organizations and enterprises will observe a significantly faster return on investment (ROI) and overall reduction in capital and operational expenditures following the introduction of advanced data reduction technology.
"IT managers are increasingly turning to their vendors for products that reduce both the capital and operational costs of running a data center while remaining friendly to the environment," said Bob Farkaly, director of product management, Exar. "BitWackr-equipped products deliver storage capacity that requires fewer disk drives, reducing both power consumption and cooling requirements, while maintaining very high levels of performance and assured data integrity."
About BitWackr
Exar's BitWackr is software combined with specialized hardware that enables OEMs, System Integrators (SIs) and Value-Add Resellers (VARs) to quickly and easily incorporate data deduplication, data compression, thin provisioning, enhanced security and physical storage capacity monitoring into Windows-based products and OEMs building Linux-based products.
The BitWackr is a developmental shortcut to the implementation of application and nearline data reduction products. BitWackr customers implementing deduplication, compression, encryption and thin provisioning fully retain the ability to perform their own development efforts to deliver distinctive value-added functionality.
BitWackr is on the leading edge of technology and is the only product available today that enables the construction of the next generation of advanced data reduction solutions quickly, with minimal development and integration effort and at highly affordable price points.
