Everyday Health Launches A "Special Report on Women's Wellness" Shedding Necessary Light On What Defines Her Well Being In Today's Uncertain Climate
Everyday Health set out to understand how women are defining, rating and valuing wellness through a first-of-its-kind survey and data analysis with clinical and cultural expert POVs resulting in new content to better inspire and enable wellness.
NEW YORK, Dec. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Everyday Health, one of the largest consumer health websites, with an addressable audience of over 40 million monthly unique users and 70 million registered wellness seekers, launched the "Special Report on Women's Wellness 2017" - today. The report is comprised of survey results and analysis of 3,000 U.S. based women, ages 25-65 across a geographic, economic, and cultural spectrum. Included alongside the results are reactions and perspectives to the data as well as practical tips from more than a dozen renowned and influential experts such as New York Times bestselling author Dr. Christiane Northrup M.D., Dr. Mike Varshavski, Family Medicine Physician and Most Followed Doctor, Mayo Clinic's Director of Women's Health Stephanie Faubion, MD, Laura Berman, PhD, Lauren Streicher, MD, attorney Gloria Allred, and authors Ann Shoket and Jennifer Weiss-Wolfe.
Women are a powerful force in healthcare, both as patients and professionals. Making up 51% of the U.S. population, women dominate the healthcare industry as employees and caregivers. Women make a shocking 80% of all health and wellness decisions from picking healthcare professionals, hospitals and clinics to purchasing health and wellness products, programs and packaged goods.
After an in-depth review of research revealed a lack of data on the totality of factors that play a role in how a woman feels about herself in the context of wellness, the survey was developed. After the results were in, interviews were conducted for reactions and commentary. Discussions about what data really mattered and what were the proverbial aha moments ensued, in addition to, how to bring the data to life and how to create 'responsive content' as an authoritative publisher. The Special Report is divided into 11 sections including: "The Stress of Anxiety," "Harassment Reckoning," "Sexual Health and STDs," "Sleep," "Millennials," "Finances," "Work-Life Balance," "Body Image and BMI" and "Wellness Predictors."
In defining "wellness," the Everyday Health research and editorial teams took a holistic and macro view of health plus a micro, day-to-day focus. The results show stark differences between generations and geographies in wellness determinants and aspirational goals, but striking similarities in wellness busters and boosters.
Some of the survey findings include:
- 81% of women are not getting a good night's sleep on a weekly basis
- One third of the respondents, across all age groups, are more afraid of loneliness than a cancer diagnosis
- Only 50% feel "loved, cherished, supported or special to someone else"
- Two thirds of respondents selected "amazing food" over "amazing sex" when asked which of the two options they "craved."
- 1 out of every 2 respondents worry about the health and wellness of someone else on a daily basis
- Nearly 75% of women surveyed claim body and self-image negatively affect their wellness
- 69% of women identify financial security as one of the top values that matter most to their overall wellness, with 1 in 2 worrying about their finances weekly
- 68% felt "more secure because of my rocking bank account" than her "rocking body."
- 7 out of 10 women would prefer to be known for their brains over their bodies
"I personally had a few wake-up calls and moments of reflection while pouring over the data," said Lisa Kennedy, Executive Vice President and GM of Everyday Health. "I'm inspired by the events of the day and the need for all of us to step out of our own echo chambers and unpack what really determines the quality and totality of a person's wellness. By better understanding that, we can offer better content, support and tools."
"We want to change the conversation from 'here's what's wrong' to being solution oriented, and focus on how we can fix these issues moving forward. The best way to solve a problem is to get to the root of it," said Maureen Connolly, Editor-in-Chief of Everyday Health. "We're building a community online and on social through #OwnYourWellness and by creating content that makes us smarter, stronger and bolder."
The survey design included a "This or That" mechanism to get at hyper-timely truths. The response was overwhelmingly positive. As a result, Everyday Health is encouraging everyone to take the "This or That Women's Wellness Quiz" and see how their responses compare.
In addition to the Women's Wellness Special Report, Survey, and Quiz, Everyday Health saw the need to launch a series of new articles and guides in response to the informational needs identified in the research. Subsequent Everyday Health surveys will examine timely issues that are causing a wave culturally and clinically.
