Equatorial Guinea Leads Sub-Saharan Africa In Adult Literacy, Says UNESCO Report
MALABO, Equatorial Guinea, Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Republic of Equatorial Guinea has the highest adult literacy rate in Sub-Saharan Africa, said UNESCO's Education for All (EFA) report.
Between 2005 and 2011, the West African nation reached a 94% adult literacy rate, placing it ahead of the other 45 states within the region. The EFA also reports that Equatorial Guinea has achieved almost universal literacy among young people between 15 and 24 years old, a rate of 98%, behind only Seychelles and South Africa.
The UNESCO EFA report named Equatorial Guinea as one of the countries most likely to achieve a pre-primary enrollment target of at least 70% and reach gender parity in primary education by 2015.
In the recommendations section, the report also pointed out the need to increase the teaching staff and enhance the teachers' training in order to maintain the educational development already underway.
About Equatorial Guinea
The Republic of Equatorial Guinea (República de Guinea Ecuatorial) is the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa, and one of the smallest nations on the continent. In the late-1990s, American companies helped discover the country's oil and natural gas resources, which only within the last five years began contributing to the global energy supply. Equatorial Guinea is now working to serve as a pillar of stability and security in its region of West Central Africa. The country hosted the 2011 Summit of the African Union.
