Crazy…or wise? The traditional wisdom of indigenous cultures often contradicts modern views about a mental health crisis. Is it a 'calling' to grow or just a 'broken brain'? The documentary Crazywise explores what can be learned from people who have turned their psychological crisis into a positive transformative experience. Co-directed by Phil Borges and Kevin Tomlinson, Crazywise was the Audience Award winner at the recent Friday Harbor Film Festival. Green Planet Films founder Suzanne Harle works with Tomlinson's previous film BACK TO THE GARDEN: Flower Power Comes Full Circle which led to the acquisition of Crazywise for the educational market.
"I am pleased to be able to work with the filmmakers we have already established relationships with," says Ms. Harle. "Producers might make one environmental film, and their next film might be another genre. By expanding into Human Ecology we can continue working with them."
On the environmental front, 1.5 Stay Alive, directed by Lucian Segura, is about sea level rise and tropical storms in the Caribbean due to climate change eerily forecasted the recent hurricanes in the Caribbean islands, Texas and Florida. The film combines reggae, blues, and calypso music plus science discussed by experts to showcase how the effect of a few degrees in ocean temperature can turn a tropical storm to a Category 4 hurricane in 24 hours. Tidewater, directed by Roger Sorkin focuses on Hampton Roads, Virginia, and how the U.S. military is fighting, or adapting to, the sea level rise that is challenging the largest military base in the world.
