"Energy Abundance, or Poverty?" Is Theme of Doctors' Meeting
TUCSON, Ariz., July 18, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To support public health, continued access to abundant, affordable energy is essential, say physicians who are meeting on Long Island, July 28-29. This access is threatened by policies based on bogus environmental risks.
The 30th annual meeting of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness (DDP) features serious scientists discussing the facts on energy production, and debunking media scares. http://www.ddponline.org/2012/03/08/2012-ddp-meeting-july-27-29/
President Obama's promise of skyrocketing bills for electricity will be kept, if current policies continue, states Jane Orient, M.D, president Physicians for Civil Defense. "This also means blackouts, brownouts, continued loss of American industry, worsened unemployment, and deepening dependence on unreliable or hostile foreign sources of energy."
The American Medical Association and other medical groups have unfortunately bought into popular myths based on junk science, Orient states, especially the threat of catastrophic climate change from man-made sources of carbon dioxide.
"Carbon dioxide is plant food and the basic building block of all life," she points out. "It is not a pollutant, and its effect on global temperature is small."
Climate scientist Richard Lindzen of MIT will speak on "Alarming Global Warming: What Happens to Science in the Public Square." Sociologist Rael Jean Isaac, author of Roosters of the Apocalypse, will explain "Why 'Climate Science' Isn't About Science." Phil Valentine's documentary "An Inconsistent Truth" will be featured at the end of the program.
S. Fred Singer, founder of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) will discuss methods used by the Administration to bring about energy rationing. Astrophysicist Willie Soon will focus on the effects of the EPA's draconian mercury standards.
As public alarm is usually fomented by the misuse of statistics, mathematician Matt Briggs will speak on "Statistical Follies and Epidemiology." Physicist Howard Hayden will discuss "data noise" and "political noise."
The spotlight has recently been on exaggerated perils of nuclear radiation. Jerry Cuttler of Atomic Energy of Canada will discuss appropriate evacuation standards for nuclear power plant mishaps. Howard Maccabee, a radiation oncologist, will examine the health effects of medical radiation.
Energy independence is the subject of Bonner Cohen. Attempts to thwart the burgeoning use of hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") to recover vast amounts of petroleum and natural gas are the subject of a documentary to be presented by Karen Moreau. The question of the contribution of wind energy will be addressed by John Droz.
Paul Driessen will explain how the UN's sustainability project (Agenda 21) could crush America's prospects for energy independence, and indeed end American sovereignty and prosperity.
Other topics include biological warfare (Steven Hatfill), a perspective on the Cuban Missile Crisis (Gordon Claycomb), and the use of the Freedom of Information Act and federal open data laws (Andrew Schlafly).
The Saturday banquet talk on "Common Sense 2012" features Art Robinson, who is the author of the Oregon Global Warming Petition www.petitionproject.org, editor of Access to Energy, and now a candidate for Congress in Oregon district 4.
Registration is available at the door at the Long Island Marriott, and free press passes are available.
Doctors for Disaster Preparedness was founded in 1983 to inform the public about protection from all hazards, including natural disasters, terrorism, and war.
