DALLAS, July 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The loveable, nerdy neurobiologist on TV's No. 1 hit comedy series is headed back to school this fall. That's when students and teachers at a lucky U.S. school will get the once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet Mayim Bialik and receive science and math instruction from the real-life scientist, Emmy-nominated actress and teacher.
Students, parents and educators from around the nation are invited to enter the Texas Instruments "Take Mayim Back to School" contest on the TI Calculators Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/TICalculators) from now through Sept. 30, 2012. The lucky grand-prize winner will not only receive in-person class instruction from Bialik, but will also be awarded with TI-Nspire™ CX math and science classroom technology and a customized teacher training program for their school.
Bialik holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and regularly teaches science. Her own career path was inspired by a teacher who sparked her passion for the subject, and as the official TI spokeswoman for TI-Nspire CX math and science technology, she hopes to inspire students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and careers.
"I've grown up using a TI graphing calculator," said Bialik. "It got me through my advanced science degrees, and I still use it today. I can't wait to meet students in their classroom and show them how the technology has evolved and how it can improve their STEM education and careers."
To enter the contest, students, teachers or parents must share one fact about his or her school that they think Bialik should know, while answering the following question in 200 words or less: "How would you use math or science to help your school or community in a positive way?"
One grand-prize winner, 12 first-place winners and 25 second-place winners will be selected by TI and Bialik in early October. The contest prizes include:
- Grand Prize: Bialik will visit the winning entrant's school to lead a special math and science class this fall. The school and the entrant also will win the following TI-Nspire science and math technology:
- TI-Nspire™ CX Handhelds
- TI-Nspire™ CX Navigator™ System
- Customized Teacher Training Program for TI technology
- First Place: 12 first-place winners will receive a choice of:
