Emerging Safety Problems of FDA Approved Drugs. Is there a Solution?
Lilac Corp identifies the underlying reason for the emerging safety problems of widely used medicines, and offers a solution
SARASOTA, Fla., Nov. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A satirical cartoon by Stantis, depicts a bottle with the label: "Warning! Contains FDA approved drug." Why is it funny? After all, the FDA's job is to ensure that the approved drugs are safe. It is funny because many know that FDA approved drugs are not safe. Why not? Because drugs are new chemicals, and without the benefits of time, and the experience of a large number of real patients in real settings, the FDA assessment of their safety is merely an educated guess. To what extent? You'd be surprised. A recent study examined 222 drugs approved by the FDA between 2001 and 2010. The study discovered that soon after approving these drugs, the FDA withdrew 3 drugs, added a safety warning to 61 drugs, and issued a safety communication on 59 drugs. Overall, the FDA guessed wrong in almost one third of the cases! [1] Another recent study found that, surprisingly, the millions of people who took omeprazole (Prilosec®), an FDA approved drug, had more than twice the chance of developing stomach cancer. Moreover, those who took it for over three years had an eight times higher chance of developing this cancer. [2]
In contrast, the authors of a paper published in a Pharmacognosy Review said that "Healing with medicinal plants is as old as mankind itself." [3] An ancient herbal ingredient, which has been around for 1000s of years, has a much better chance of being safe than a newly approved chemical. For instance, the herbal antiviral treatment Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin uses herbal ingredients that people use in real life since ancient times. For example, Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin contains cinnamon, licorice, and green tea extracts. These ingredients have been written about by the medical writer Celsus (25 BC–50 AD); [3] ancient Greeks; [4] and traditional Chinese medicine, [5] respectively. Given their long history of safe use, it is very unlikely that they will cause any problems.
Although the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry invest billions of dollars in screening new chemicals for their safety (and efficacy), in many cases the screening fails, sometimes after being approved by the FDA, and after being used by millions of people. In contrast, the ingredients of the antiviral herbal treatment Gene-Eden-VIR/Novirin are not new. They have been around for a very long time, and therefore, are most likely safer than any antiviral new chemical.
