Echo Barrier Helps Reduce Roadwork Noise In California Residential Neighborhood

NEW YORK, Dec. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Echo Barrier USA is pleased to announce that its H2 Barriers were used to help reduce noise on the Caltrans Project for the California Department of Transportation. The Caltrans Project was comprised of saw cutting existing pavement at multiple locations, replacing the concrete with the rapid strength concrete pavement and grinding the entire route's concrete pavement east and west bound. It also included cold planning existing asphalt concrete median and outside shoulders as well as a portion of the mainline and replacement with hot mix asphalt.

This portion of the route passed through residential neighborhoods with some directly overlooking the freeway within 100'. It was determined that a mitigation system would be required to defuse the noise from the saw cutting operations, which were expected to exceed 95 dB. The mitigation posed the challenge of mobility, making it important to find a noise barrier that was lightweight, easy to handle and mobile.

The Echo Barriers were installed on water barrier units using regular metal fence posts. The water barriers were filled with enough water to weigh them down, allowing the needed mobility. This enabled flexibility to either surround noise production operations or to run a straight line – depending on the direction of the noise to be mitigated.

On average, there was a measured reduction of approximately 11 dB when measured at each of 25', 50' and 100' from the source. Much of the work was done after dark, therefore Echo Barrier provided night reflectors to create high visibility, pleasing the DOT.
