MESQUITE, Texas, Nov. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dallas Mavericks' Dancers and mascot "Champ" were a part of a pep rally for Breakfast Breaks, a new program to promote the benefits of eating breakfast, held at Mesquite High School in Texas on November 13.
The event included a speech by the school's basketball coach about the importance of eating breakfast each day, a ribbon-cutting ceremony to tipoff the school's basketball season, and free breakfasts given out to more than 500 students. The school's drumline played while Mavs' mascot Champ danced with the high school cheerleaders. There were also photo opportunities for the students with the Mavs' dancers and mascot. "There was definitely excitement in the air all week leading up to the rally," noted school principal, Kevin Samples.
Like many schools throughout the nation looking to boost school breakfast participation, Mesquite High School considered alternative distribution methods other than the traditional cafeteria, and that effort has earned positive results. The high school recently added a kiosk for breakfast near the library where students tend to congregate in the morning before school.
"Before the kiosk, we were averaging about 250 students for breakfast. After the kiosk we are averaging about 335 students for breakfast. That's a 34% increase with very little advertisement," explained Lark Stewart, MS, RD/LD, Food and Nutrition Services for Mesquite High School. "We know that partnering with the Mavericks will help drive participation even more. The event was a huge success. The room was packed and we had spillover down the halls and up the stairs. I'm pretty sure the whole school now knows about the breakfast kiosk!"
"When professional athletic organizations support healthy eating habits such as the importance of starting each day with breakfast, that's an impactful message to teenagers today," said James Redou, Regional Sales Manager for E S Foods. "We are so pleased to be working with the Mavs to increase awareness about the benefits of school breakfast and lunches. We even designed special Breakfast Breaks packaging for the promotion featuring the Mavericks and their two mascots." E S Foods has also teamed up with the Mavericks for similar programs in other Dallas area schools to promote school breakfast and afterschool meals.
