DETROIT, March 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- DTE Energy today named Renze Hoeksema to the position of vice president, Government Affairs, succeeding Fred Shell, who will retire in June. Since 2012, Hoeksema, a 30-year veteran of the company, has served as the director, state government affairs, after a successful tenure of leading the company's federal government affairs office in Washington D.C. In his new role, Hoeksema will oversee the company's corporate federal, state and local government affairs work.
Shell, who will retire in June, has contributed substantially to the company's positive impact on communities throughout Michigan and in Washington D.C. Shell's contribution over his nearly 40 year tenure with both MichCon and DTE Energy has positioned the company well to continue its efforts of shaping sustainable energy policy for Michigan.
"I would like to thank Fred Shell for his 39 years of exemplary service to DTE Energy and as chairman of the DTE Energy Foundation. DTE Energy and Michigan have greatly benefited from Fred's leadership on energy policy, including the comprehensive energy legislation passed in 2008,"said Gerry Anderson, chairman and CEO, DTE Energy. "While we will miss Fred, we know that Renze's deep experience and relationships at the federal, state and local level will leave leadership of our government affairs work in good hands for years to come."
During his career, Shell has served on multiple state and local non-profit boards, including as chair of the Michigan Economic Development Foundation, vice chair of the Metropolitan Affairs Council, and past board member the Michigan Chamber of Commerce.
Hoeksema, who joined the company in 1981, has held a variety of management positions with MichCon and DTE responsible for speech writing, media relations, the political action committee, economic development, and local, state and federal government affairs. He is a graduate of Hope College and Syracuse University; holding a Bachelor of Arts and Master's degrees in Public Administration.
Hoeksema founded the Campaign to Keep America Warm in 1994, and has chaired the Government Affairs Advisory Committees of the American Gas Association, Edison Electric Institute and the Nuclear Energy Institute at different times through his career. He has served as chair of the Michigan Business Group in Washington, D.C., and currently serves as vice chair of the Nuclear Waste Strategy Coalition, on the Board of Directors of the Public Affairs Council, and on the advisory committee of Michigan's Children's Trust Fund.
