doTERRA Wellness Advocate Teaches Stress Management Class for High Schoolers
Volunteer Fights Anxiety and Related Issues through Education
PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Dec. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- doTERRA Wellness Advocate, Karen Renaud, enjoys her involvement with the business side of doTERRA, and her ability to use the products personally. Aside from her interest in doTERRA, she teaches a class at her local high school in Medfield, MA where she uses her talents to help the students manage their stress levels.
When Medfield High School conducted a Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the results showed that students feel like they have high stress levels. These results caused a big push for the creation of a "Stress Management" class to help students with the typical feelings of anxiety that teenagers experience. This semester, Karen is teaching a new elective course for students who are interested in learning a variety of stress management techniques like meditation and mindfulness. Because this class is considered an elective, the students who sign up are choosing to be there—which makes them open to ideas for improving their wellbeing.
Teenagers experience a number of stressors in their daily lives that can negatively affect their quality of life. 27% of U.S. teens say they experience levels of extreme stress during the school year, while only 13% report struggling with stress in the summer. When high school students don't know how to cope with feelings of stress and anxiety, they often turn to behaviors that result in chronic illness or poor health. Prolonged stress can contribute to conditions and diseases like high blood pressure, migraines, heart disease, diabetes, and a higher risk for infection. Aside from physical ailments, long-term stress can also lead to conditions like anxiety and depression if it goes unchecked and untreated.
In her Stress Management class, Karen focuses on activities like practicing mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and Tai Chi. Students keep their own journals and develop personalized stress management plans throughout the course. Part of their planning will include daily "self-checks," as well as pre and post stress management activities to track their progress.
Karen Renaud is a shining example of how doTERRA Wellness Advocates choose to use their time and talents to improve their own communities. The students of Medfield High School will undoubtedly benefit from the techniques they learn in the Stress Management class—setting them up for success in later life.
