doTERRA Cultivates Relationship with the Sandy Hook Trauma Relief Project
The Sandy Hook Trauma Relief project aims to help community members with feelings of PTSD, anxiety, and depression following tragic events like those at Sandy Hook Elementary.
PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, April 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, many community members felt a desperate need to reach out and help with the healing process. doTERRA Wellness Advocates Kristin Van Wey and Michelle Brissette were among the many who sprang into action, hoping to help the people of Newtown. As a Sandy Hook parent, Michelle began reaching out to her neighbors and friends right away, wanting to help in any way she could. Kristin was also deeply affected by the incident, and felt a compelling need to offer her time and talents to the community.
As they each began reaching out to the community and helping with trauma relief, Kristin and Michelle soon crossed paths—realizing they had the same mission. Kristin and Michelle would eventually join forces with other passionate community members to help with something called the Sandy Hook Trauma Relief project. The project was started by professionals at the Tapping Solution, a local institution designed to provide trauma relief and support following traumatic events.
The project would eventually spread throughout the community, with the help of two more institutions—the Resiliency Center of Newtown and the Newtown Recovery and Resiliency Team. All three of these organizations offer services that strive to restore peace to the lives of those who were affected by the traumatic events at Sandy Hook Elementary, and to fulfill the needs of the community by providing support. Over the last three years, Kristin and Michelle have helped with the Sandy Hook Trauma Relief project, by training and working closely with the staff of these three main organizations, to help with trauma recovery.
For people who have survived a traumatic event, feelings of distress can last long after the event is over. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is often a result for people involved in tragic and traumatic events like those at Sandy Hook Elementary. Special programs (like those at the Tapping Solution, Resiliency Center, and Newtown Recovery) aim to help individuals learn how to process the traumatic events, and deal with depressed or anxious feelings in a healthy manner. Many people with PTSD can experience feelings of severe depression or anxiety for months or even years following an event. Having a healthy outlet for processing traumatic events can help those who are suffering from depression, anxiety, or PTSD.
As Kristin, Michelle, and countless others put their hearts into the Sandy Hook Trauma Relief project, doTERRA provided a donation to help the project continue. With help from doTERRA and other generous donors, the project has continued to be a successful aid for the community as they strive to move on from the events of 2012. Though time has passed, this project is still extremely relevant and in need of support. Michelle says, "We are now living a new norm, one that can be extremely difficult. As the rest of the world moves on, we are here, still in this heavy cloud of sorrow and loss."
