WASHINGTON, Oct. 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2017, a total of 100 contraceptive social marketing programs generated 80 million couple years of protection (CYPs) to couples, women, and girls around the world, according to the 2017 Contraceptive Social Marketing (CSM) Statistics report just released by DKT International. With a 6.8% increase from 2016 and a nearly 18% increase from 2015, the 2017 report shows the sale of almost 1.8 billion condoms, 44 million injectable contraceptives, nearly 1.4 million implants, over 17.3 million emergency contraception (EC) pills, and 5.1 million IUDs.
"We are proud that social marketing's impact increases each year and remains a major force in providing low and middle-income women and couples with family planning and HIV prevention around the world," says Chris Purdy, President and CEO of DKT International. "Social marketing will continue to be instrumental in helping to reach the FP2020 goal of adding 120 million new users of contraceptives by the year 2020."
The report details 100 contraceptive social marketing programs, all of which are helping provide modern contraception and reduce the unmet need for family planning, largely through existing private sector channels.
DKT Indonesia took the top spot on the list for the fifth consecutive year, delivering nearly 9.2 million CYPs in 2017 through social marketing channels such as pharmacies, convenience stores, and midwife clinics. MSI/PHS (Population Health Services) India was second with 6.3 million CYPs, and DKT India/Mumbai was third with 4.9 million CYPs.
This table shows the 10 largest contraceptive social marketing programs, those that delivered more than 300,000 CYPs and reached more than 10% of the target market, which is calculated as 75% of the population of women of reproductive age.
