Analyst Update: Completion of Acquisition, Restart of Operations, and Quarterly Results
Reviewed by: Rohit Tuli, CFA®
The U.S. stocks declined on Friday after two consecutive days of advance as concerns over the growth of the world's largest economy revived after disappointing job data for the month of December. According to a Reuters report, U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose in December, beating the market expectations, but wages unexpectedly fell. All the three major U.S. benchmark indices ended the session in red, with S&P 500 index closing at 2,044.81, down 0.84%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 0.95% lower at 17,737.37, and the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.68% at 4,704.07. Investors also turned cautious ahead of the Q4 2014 corporate earnings season. Meanwhile, the European shares closed lower on Friday amid uncertainty ahead of the release of the U.S. nonfarm payroll data and after latest data showed that German exports and industrial output declined in November. Asian markets were mostly higher on Friday, tracking two-day rally in the U.S. and European markets.
Eastman Chemical Company (Eastman Chemical) completed the acquisition of Taminco Corp. for $2.8 billion in cash and assumed debt. The acquired Taminco businesses are expected to be accretive to 2015 EPS by greater than $0.35 and to 2016 EPS by greater than $0.60.
Teck Resources Ltd. (Teck Resources) reported maiden shipment of zinc and lead in concentrate from its restarted Pend Oreille Operations in northeastern Washington State to its nearby Trail Operations in British Columbia for processing.
Tenaris SA's (Tenaris) third quarter 2014 top line remained flat year-over-year, but declined 9% sequentially in spite of a solid increase in North America, as they were affected by lower sales in Saudi Arabia and a slowdown in shipments to deepwater projects in sub-Saharan Africa as well as lower sales across Europe. The bottom line for the quarter improved 5.8% YoY.
Ternium SA's (Ternium) third quarter 2014 top line witnessed growth, with 1% YoY improvement in Steel shipments to 2.3 million tons and 8% YoY increase in Iron Ore shipments to 1.0 million tons. Bottom line for the quarter improved 14.2% YoY.
Terra Nitrogen Company, L.P. (Terra Nitrogen) reported higher third quarter 2014 net sales, led by higher volume, which was partially offset by lower average prices. However, the bottom line for the quarter declined c.1% YoY due to lower average selling prices and higher natural gas costs, which were partially offset by higher volumes for Q3 2014 as compared to Q3 2013.
