Detroit Metro CVB Awarded 2014 Travel Weekly Gold Magellan Award
DETROIT, Sept. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCVB) has been awarded a 2014 Gold Magellan Award by Travel Weekly for its Comeback City advertising campaign. The award was in the category United States/Canada - Overall Destinations – City. The DMCVB's agency of record SMZ designed and submitted the creative campaign.
The campaign, which was integrated across all media, including print, video, trade show, collateral, social and direct mail, features authentic stories from meeting planners and hospitality industry professionals that bring to life the idea that we live in this city and the city lives in us. In the 10 months since the campaign's launch, bookings for meetings in the Detroit market nearly doubled and hotel room occupancies are up 47 percent from 2013.
With entries from across the U.S. and around the world, the Magellan Award winners represent the best in the travel industry and salute the outstanding travel professionals behind it all.
"We are honored to have received the gold Magellan Award for our advertising campaign," said Larry Alexander, DMCVB President & CEO. "We take great pride in our comeback city story as it grew organically from what others were saying about our city. We tasked our agency of record SMZ to create a campaign that would reflect the comeback and they delivered."
The Magellan Awards is the premier awards program honoring a broad range of industry segments including Hotels and Resorts, Travel Destinations, Cruise Lines, Online Travel Services, Airlines and Airports, Travel Agents and Agencies, Tour Operators and Car Rental Companies.
"People who enter the Magellans know they're competing against a very talented and very creative group of individuals and agencies," said Arnie Weissmann, editor in chief of Travel Weekly. "The travel industry marketers and designers who walked away with Magellan awards this year pushed themselves to new heights. When you look at the winning entries, you understand why consumers have been inspired to travel in numbers never seen before."
The Magellan Awards are judged and overseen by a one-of-a-kind panel of top travel professionals representing the best names and most accomplished leaders from the industry. In determining winners, entries do not compete with one another, instead they are judged against a standard of excellence based on the long experience of Travel Weekly. To uphold this high standard of excellence, a category may have multiple winners, or no winners at all.
