Del Webb Communities Join the Fight Against Breast Cancer, Raise More Than $50,000 to Benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Aug. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Armed with spatulas, mixers, blenders and good will, residents living in Del Webb communities across the nation raised more than $50,000 toward the fight against breast cancer.
As part of a special program called "1,000 Cooks for the Cure," the nation's top 55+ homebuilder hosted events at 45 Del Webb communities with all proceeds benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Thousands of Baby Boomers participated in the events, which featured silent auctions, pot lucks, cooking demonstrations, food tastings, live entertainment and prizes including signature Susan G. Komen pink KitchenAid appliances.
"Take a great cause, add a generous helping of Del Webb residents and friends, toss in a heap of fun events and it's a recipe for success," said Deborah Meyer, chief marketing officer for Del Webb parent company, PulteGroup. "Many Del Webb residents know someone who has been impacted by breast cancer so these grassroots events that attracted thousands of people were a fantastic opportunity to support cancer research in a meaningful way."
Del Webb residents volunteer in excess of 3 million service hours a year. Their experience with people who have been affected by breast cancer coupled with the energy and camaraderie of these natural volunteers made enlisting support for the Komen fight simple, Meyer continued.
1,000 Cooks for the Cure is part of Cook for the Cure®, a decade-long partnership between Komen and KitchenAid that has raised over $8 million for the cause through the sale of pink cooking products, celebrity chef auctions and grassroots initiatives. While Cook for the Cure offers ways to support the cause year-round, the goal of this initiative is to enlist 1,000 cooks to host gatherings during a 10-day period in July.
