Death Race Impresario Announces International 'Spartan Race Series' Launching May 16, 2010, in Burlington, VT

PITTSFIELD, Vt., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Joe Desena, the uber-sports guru from Pittsfield, VT, who created the legendary, obstacle-laden Death Race (www.peakraces.com), announces the new Spartan Race Series www.spartanrace.com.

"The Death Race is about pushing competitors out of their comfort zones and into new realizations about their physical and mental potentials," said Desena. "It is for one percent of the population. Spartan Race is a unique, fun event for 99 percent of the population."

The series launches May 16 in Burlington, VT, with subsequent Spartan battles in Montreal July 4; Toronto July 11, New York City Aug. 15, Boston Sept. 5, Cambridge, UK Sept. 19 and Norwich, UK Oct. 3. Plans call for adding dates in Atlanta, Chicago and in a Texas city.

Brian Duncanson, a nine-year event producer, is Spartan Race Series director. Site-specific managers will be announced.

He said a race that may take place on a two-mile course will feature what he termed "crazy obstacles" en route, creating challenges and taking "perhaps up to 45 minutes to complete. Obstacles may include a wall climb, tunnel crawl, mud pit, wading through water, spear throw and more.

"It's a metaphor for life; you never know what's around the corner. You just have to deal with the challenge presented to you and move on," said Duncanson.

From the thousands of competitors who engage in the Spartan Race Series, one percent are expected to make the cut to become eligible to compete in the annual Death Race held in Pittsfield.

Who does Duncanson see as Spartan Race competitors?

"Everyone, really. The Spartan Races are designed for participants to have fun and cross the finish line. You need a little physical conditioning and a taste for some adventure," said Duncanson. The per-person entry fee per event is $50.

He said the finish line/expo arena will be designed for a hero's welcome and the celebration includes a post-event feast along with such medieval events as spear throwing and fire breathing.

"This is not an extreme sporting event that will scare people away. It's about the fun, getting dirty, getting down in the mud, something exciting and new," said Duncanson.
