CHICAGO, Nov. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday night the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund Board of Directors, alumni and friends came together to celebrate 25 years of awarding high school scholarships to young men and women from Chicago's most underserved neighborhoods. The theme of "Ignite Potential" struck a strong chord among the crowd, who gathered to help raise funds for the 120 new scholars that DMSF will select this year. Held at Chicago's iconic Union Station, the 25th Anniversary celebration surpassed its goal, raising more than $1.2 million, which will leverage an additional $9.6 million in high school and college tuition assistance.
"This year's gala represents a major milestone for the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund. Over the last twenty-five years, we have been able to serve 2,100 scholars and their families. Our Board of Directors is completely committed to growth," said Loretta Cooney, Chairperson of the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund Board of Directors. "Our organization is very fortunate to have the generous and loyal support of our Board and the community to raise the funds needed to grow the number of scholars we can serve."
The funds raised will support the tuition and programming needed to increase the number of scholars served in 2015 by 20% and kick off DMSF's "Forward to 500" initiative to grow to 500 students by the fall of 2020. To do so, DMSF will need to raise an additional $2 million per year.
The mission of the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund is to give high school scholarship assistance and educational support to Chicago students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. DMSF seeks to make a life-altering difference in the lives of its Scholars by providing them with the best opportunity to succeed in high school and college, igniting potential and enriching lives. More than 100 DMSF Alumni were present to celebrate with the other 500 guests in attendance, representing 20 of the graduating classes since 1994.
There are currently more than 350 DMSF scholars enrolled in private independent, parochial and boarding schools across the country. For a list of partner schools, to make a donation or for more information, please visit our website at www.dmsf.org.
