Many Americans may be surprised to consider a style of yoga with Korean origins, but the results its practitioners experience would seem familiar to adherents of other forms of yoga. To many observers, its East Asian heritage is clearly recognizable, as some practice elements resemble Tai Chi and Qi Gong. Much like those mind-body practices, this form of yoga focuses on the balance of energy known as "Ki" or "Chi." In fact, "Dahn" is a Korean word meaning "energy."
Dahn Yoga founder, Ilchi Lee, developed this unique mind-body practice by integrating Korean Taoist principles with aspects of Oriental medicine and modern life skills. Lee began teaching his exercises to a stroke victim in a public park in South Korea in 1980; this grew into regular public Dahn Yoga classes. The simple exercises were easily replicated and formed the basis of lifestyle improvement for many. Five years later, those classes evolved into holistic centers that spread rapidly throughout Korea. In little more than a decade, the universal appeal of the techniques saw expansion to other countries, most notably the United States.
Students of Ilchi Lee taught Dahn Yoga basics in several US cities before formally organizing as one company on June 18,1996. Since then, Dahn Yoga has developed and diversified as a practice while the company, Dahn Yoga & Health Centers, Inc., expanded to more American cities. During June, 2011, Dahn Yoga celebrates its 15th anniversary with member appreciation awards and expanded outreach and community service activities. Over the years, the company has continuously developed innovative systems and techniques for holistic health and joyful living and looks to contribute to the health of individuals and communities in the future.
