CYREN Report: Q1 2015 Sees 51 Percent Increase in Phishing Sites

Rapidly growing volume of Web security traffic reveals new threat trends

MCLEAN, Va., May 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- CYREN (NASDAQ: CYRN) today published its Q1 2015 Cyber Threat Report. In the report, CYREN security analysts note a steep rise in phishing URLs, tracking 3.86 million at the end of March compared to 2.55 million at the start of the year – a 51% increase. Other notable report findings include:

Five of the top 10 Web malware in Q1 2015, as analyzed by CYREN, consist of exploit kits that scan the user's system for unpatched vulnerabilities, then deliver the appropriate payload to begin compromising the victim's computer.
1,080,000 new android malware were identified in the first quarter of 2015 compared to 790,000 in Q4 2014 – a 36 percent increase.
30 percent of all email attached malware in the last six months was identified as macro malware with .doc, .xls, or .docx extensions – a nearly dormant attack method for the last 10 or more years that is now experiencing a clear resurgence.
An average of 48.8 billion spam emails per day were sent in Q1 2015, marking little change from Q4 2014.
