PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., Dec. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Crossmatch™, a leading provider of identity management enrollment and authentication solutions, today announced that Bundesamt fur Migration und Fluchtlinge (BAMF), the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, has deployed the Company's Guardian fingerprint scanner to biometrically enroll thousands of refugees and migrants entering the country.
As the influx of refugees and migrants fleeing economically depressed, war torn or politically unstable states continues, EU member governments are under increasing pressure to process, protect and place individuals. One of the first steps in processing migrants is to verify or establish an assured identity. This is routinely done through fingerprinting, as many arrive without any form of valid identification or with falsified credentials. The procedure reduces fraud and abuse of the asylum process, as well as seeks to rapidly identify known terrorists or persons-of-interest from entering under false pretenses.
To date, BAMF has purchased over one thousand Guardian devices that are deployed at more than three dozen field offices where refugees are fingerprinted and asylum applications are processed. Refugees' fingerprints are checked against the BAMF database to verify identity and improve tracking, support administration and ensure accurate benefits disbursement.
Biometric enrollment systems need to be simple to use and operate, extremely reliable and capable of rapidly capturing high quality images without time-consuming pretreating of hands or calibration of the device. The Guardian family of enrollment livescan devices have a long history of reliably serving in critical identity authentication and enrollment applications where high throughput and demanding conditions are commonplace. Over 80,000 Guardians have been fielded since 2006 to support crucial identity management applications around the world, including the processing of foreign nationals applying for U.S. visas and when entering the United States at air ports of entry as part of the US VISIT program.
"The current European refugee crisis and recent Paris attacks highlight the need to validate identities of those crossing sovereign borders," said Richard Agostinelli, Crossmatch CEO. "At Crossmatch, we have a long history of delivering reliable, rapid capture enrollment and authentication solutions that support national security screening and benefits administration applications."
