Coverity Seals Integrity Across the Software Supply Chain
- New Coverity Software Integrity Ratings provide companies a standard for measuring the integrity of in-house and third-party software
- Coverity Integrity Seal to mark software and products that have been tested for safety, security and performance
SAN FRANCISCO, April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Coverity, Inc., the software integrity leader, today announced the Coverity Software Integrity Rating program. Coverity Software Integrity Ratings provide companies with an objective standard to measure the integrity of their software as well as reveal defects in software they integrate from third-party suppliers. Companies that receive an approved rating for their products will be issued a Coverity Integrity Seal. This seal can be displayed with a company's rated products as a sign that the software was analyzed for defects that could compromise product safety, security, and performance.
Software integrity is an indicator of risk created by software defects. Software integrity risk gauges the potential of a software defect altering the expected behavior, safety, performance or security of products and services operated by software. The complexity of modern electronic products creates integrity risk due to the integrations between software from multiple components and systems originating from different vendors and partners. Comprehensively analyzing the trillions of possible paths to defects between these third-party software components is a very difficult challenge.
"EchoStar uses Coverity to help reduce the risk of software defects in our award-winning portfolio of set-top boxes, DVRs, home networking and place-shifting technology," said Mark Jackson, president of EchoStar Technologies L.L.C., a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation. "We support using Coverity's Software Integrity Rating program across our supply chain to help ensure our vendors and suppliers have taken steps to qualify for the 'Coverity Integrity Seal' and that their products are free of software defects before shipping under our brand."
"ip.access uses Coverity to help ensure that the software that operates our market leading solutions for GSM, GPRS, EDGE and 3G is not compromised by a software problem that could impact our carrier-grade reliability," said Philip Rimell, Chief Operating Officer at ip.access. He added, "We also mandate that our key suppliers and outsourcing partners use Coverity for the same reason."
The Coverity Software Integrity Rating program helps companies to create a common "apples to apples" measurement of software risk across their entire software supply chain. The ratings are based on an assessment of the potential impact of defects, type of defects, total number of defects, total number of defects per thousand lines of code (defect density), correct use of Coverity products, and analysis accuracy.
This rating program will also help companies promote the success of development teams that consistently deliver highly rated software code and products. Development teams can also use Coverity Software Integrity Ratings as objective evidence to support requirements for quality and safety standards.
"The integrity of your software has a direct impact on the integrity of your brand," said Dave Peterson, Chief Marketing Officer at Coverity. "Businesses are at risk because there is no easy way to objectively measure the risk of software defects in the products they are shipping or the software they are integrating from third-party suppliers. Companies displaying the Coverity Integrity Seal demonstrate that they are committed to delivering products that are safe, secure and will behave as planned under the most unpredictable conditions."
