Timothy Coors, Co-CEO of CoorsTek, joined a distinguished group of presenters at the Edison Awards' Meet the Innovators Forum. He explained the key role that engineered ceramic components play in helping innovative companies produce breakthrough products, including those provided by the company that were used by Thomas Edison and his team at his R&D laboratory in New Jersey.
"Every day, CoorsTek ceramic products used in armor systems help protect the law enforcement, security, and military personnel who protect us - uniquely combining light weight with unsurpassed hardness to counter the increasing lethality of armor- piercing ammunition and other ballistic threats," said Timothy Coors, Co-Chief Executive Officer of CoorsTek. "We are honored to be recognized by the Edison Awards for our ongoing innovation and persistent application of materials science and engineering to save lives."
The defense industry is among the many CoorsTek serves with advanced engineered ceramic components and products. CoorsTek is a leading provider of ceramic plates which are integrated into body and vehicle armor systems used by the military and law enforcement. As ballistic threats have become more sophisticated, CoorsTek has continuously improved armor protection systems by providing ceramic plates that weigh less in order to maximize mobility and that have greater hardness to address increasing ballistic penetration power. CoorsTek has developed over a dozen unique engineered ceramic formulations optimized for different armor applications and ballistic threat levels. Kilogram for kilogram, these ceramics are more than five times harder than steel and titanium alloy armor.
The company's innovation capabilities are being expanded by the addition of the CoorsTek Center for Advanced Materials in Golden, Colorado ─ a $120 million investment in its ongoing efforts to more rapidly develop new ceramic materials to help technology and manufacturing customers solve their toughest challenges. The Center includes:
- A state-of-the-art research and development hub outfitted with leading-edge equipment to develop innovative ceramic materials and processes for a variety of next-generation applications,
- A sophisticated analytical laboratory to provide the most comprehensive ceramic analyses available, and
- A world-class materials manufacturing facility enabling swift commercialization and volume production using the latest technologies in engineered ceramics processing.
Edison Award nominees were judged by more than 3,000 senior business executives and academics from across the nation whose votes acknowledge the Finalists' success in meeting the award's stringent criteria of quality. The voting panel included members of: Chief Marketing Officer Council (CMO); Design Management Institute (DMI); American Productivity & Quality Center (APQC); American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); Georgia State Marketing Roundtable (GSU); Product Development and Management Association (PDMA); Assoc. of Technology Mgmt. & Applied Engineering (ATMAE); BPI Network; past Edison Award winners; marketing professionals; scientists; designers; engineers; and academics.
