IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- University of California, Irvine Extension, has been selected by the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education to provide teacher development training for Japanese teachers of English teaching junior and senior high school students in Japan. UC Irvine Extension will host the 82 Japanese teachers for eleven weeks beginning in January to provide training in effective methods for teaching English in the Tokyo public secondary school context.
"The English teacher development program at UC Irvine Extension's International Programs department is custom-designed to address the specific challenges that Japanese English teachers have in their local teaching environments in Japan," said Denise Davis, Director, International Programs. "UC Irvine Extension has some 30 years of experience in training instructors from all over the world in the methodologies of teaching English as a second and foreign language and has a long-standing reputation as a provider of outstanding customized programs for groups of teachers sponsored by their ministry or board of education."
The eleven-week program includes extensive coursework, personal English language development, the chance to visit local Orange County schools, and the opportunity to live with an English-speaking family. Participants will not only learn the best strategies in teaching English as a foreign language in Japan, but will also gain a unique educational experience by being immersed into the American culture. With the Board's requiring these teachers to live with local homestay families, homestay provider, Universal Student Housing, is seeking quality, engaging families to host each of the 82 teachers. Families that participate in hosting a teacher will be compensated with a monthly stipend for expenses.
