Vale S.A. Research Reports
On October 17, 2014, Vale S.A. (Vale) reported that its subsidiary PT Vale Indonesia (PTVI) has signed an agreement with the Government of Indonesia (GOI) to incorporate a set of changes in its 1996 Contract of Work (CoW), which will expire on December 28, 2025. As per the Contract, PTVI is now eligible to spread its operations until 2045 through two successive 10-year periods, subject to the GoI approval based upon PTVI's fulfillment of its requirements under the COW amendment. The aforesaid amendments of the CoW encompasses - an immediate reduction in the size of PTVI's total CoW area, preserving the most relevant mining areas; a progressive royalty rate starting at 2%, which could reach 3% based on a defined nickel price threshold, reflecting the economic reality of the nickel market; a requirement for PTVI to divest an additional 20% stake to Indonesian participants in the Indonesian Stock Exchange. According to Vale, the amendment is consistent with the Company's goal to generate long term value for both its and PTVI's shareholders.
