Congressman Fattah Statement on September Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, Oct. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations Committee and lead Democrat on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, issued the following statement on the September jobs numbers released today:
"The September jobs numbers released today reveal that the unemployment rate dropped to 5.9% and 236,000 private sector jobs were added this month. Combined with revised reports from the previous two months that show an additional 69,000 jobs—we have increased payrolls with more than a quarter million jobs. Not only does September mark the 55th consecutive month of private sector job growth—continuing the longest streak on record—it is the lowest unemployment rate in six years, since July 2008.
"These are incredibly strong numbers and good news for our economy as we continue to see this Administration's economic policies in action. However, we know that there remain more than four million job openings in America and we—as Congress—must continue to enact policies to ensure that Americans have access to these jobs, and most importantly have the proper training and education to successfully fill them.
"Less than three months ago, we did just that when I joined the President at the White House to sign the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act into law—a piece of legislation that contained critical components of my Urban Jobs Act. This bill is revamping our nation's workforce training programs and will prepare even more Americans to go to work and fill these millions of job openings. With these new policies in place, I am confident our economy will continue to rebuild itself and expand opportunities for America's hardworking middle-class families."
