"While we must ensure faithful compliance with the Tax Code, and make certain taxpayers are meeting their responsibilities, this TIGTA report unfairly characterizes taxpayer error. I look forward to working with the IRS, and community organizations around the country, to support and encourage every eligible taxpayer to take advantage of this assistance for higher education. At this time in our economy, it is too critical that every American have access to college. Higher education tax credits have historically been underutilized, and while increased participation can mean higher error rates, I'm confident this problem can be addressed without restricting access to the credit."
According to the IRS and the White House 18 million families have benefited over the last two years from the American Opportunity Tax Credit.
