Congressman Fattah Announces More Than $8.2 Million in Science Research Grants for Penn, Drexel and Monell in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, April 9, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), the leading Democratic appropriator for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and advocate for neuroscience research, announces six grants for $8,232,322 on multiple subjects to three University City research institutions in Philadelphia, including the Monell Chemical Senses Center. 

Fattah, who recently visited Monell at 3500 Market Street for a tour and briefing of its cutting-edge neuroscience research program, announced the world renowned sensory research center will receive a new $561,097 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The grant will support Monell's study of the impact of diet composition during infancy on energy balance, satiety and growth under the Research for Mothers and Children Program of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at HHS.

The Congressman is author of the Fattah initiative, enacted in December, which designates neuroscience research as a national priority coordinated from the White House.

Fattah announced that the National Science Foundation has awarded four new grants, totaling $7,491,682, to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. The largest awards are $3.75 million for a project entitled "Collaborative Research: Expeditions in Computer Augmented Program Engineering (ExCAPE): Harnessing Synthesis for Software Design," and $3.4 million for "Collaborative Research: An Expedition in Computing for Compiling Printable Programmable Machines."

The Congressman also announced the award of $179,543 to Drexel University for "Collaborative Research: Spatial Cluster Detection Based on Contiguity."

Fattah is the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, which oversees appropriations for the National Science Foundation.
