Concurrent Technologies Corporation Awarded Competitively Bid Contract Worth up to $99 Million for Continued Operation of the Navy Metalworking Center
JOHNSTOWN, Pa., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has awarded Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) a competitively bid contract to continue operation of the Navy Metalworking Center (NMC). The Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract has a two-year base period, with three option years, and a ceiling of $99 million. The award of this contract will assure the retention of more than 100 professional and technical jobs. CTC has operated the Navy Metalworking Center program since its inception in 1988. The original contract to operate the National Center for Excellence in Metalworking Technology was the Company's first contract.
NMC, an ONR Manufacturing Technology Center of Excellence, is a national resource for the development and transition of advanced metalworking and manufacturing technologies, materials, and related processes. The Center works in partnership with government, industry, weapon system prime contractors, and Program Offices. NMC drives new technologies from research and development to weapon systems application with two objectives: to implement new technologies that will improve weapon system performance and to develop new production means for weapon system prime contractors and suppliers that lower the production and total ownership cost of naval and other DoD weapon systems. "The Navy Metalworking Center is one of CTC's cornerstone programs. We are honored and privileged to be of service to the Navy on this important program," said Edward J. Sheehan, Jr., CTC's President and Chief Executive Officer. "This award is a true testament to our employees, who provide exceptional technical solutions and who are completely committed to meeting and exceeding our clients' needs."
NMC Program Director Daniel L. Winterscheidt, Ph.D., added, "NMC's client focus, innovative technology development, and strong industry partnerships are keys to our success. This approach has enabled us to successfully implement more than 30 projects on our current contract that optimize manufacturing processes and reduce production and total ownership cost for Navy weapon systems."
NMC's recent implementation successes include a track weld shaver being used in the production of DDG 1000 and DDG 51 ships, which will save $2.77 million on three DDG 1000 hulls. In another initiative, NMC-identified welding and cutting process parameters are improving the connection of the DDG 1000 deckhouse to the ship's deck and will save 4,700 labor hours and $282,000 per ship. The shipyards building Virginia Class Submarines are saving thousands of labor hours per hull using improved pipe fitting tools and automation methods developed through an NMC-led project. In addition, an NMC project team developed and qualified a high-strength, low-alloy steel (HSLA-115) that is being used on the CVN 78 class of aircraft carriers and addresses the Navy's need to reduce the ship's weight.
