Community Medical & Dental Care Selects Allscripts Health Center Solution
FQHC-Specific Functionality Includes Specialized Reports, Pre-Built Templates and Payer Connectivity
CHICAGO and MONSEY, N.Y., May 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Allscripts (Nasdaq: MDRX) announced today that Community Medical & Dental Care, a federally qualified health center (FQHC), has selected the Allscripts Health Center Solution for their 30 multispecialty physicians. The solution includes the Electronic Health Record (EHR), Practice Management and advanced reporting functionality designed to meet the unique clinical, administrative and financial needs of FQHCs and other community health clinics that focus on caring for the uninsured and other economically disadvantaged populations.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), commonly known as the economic 'stimulus,' allocates $1.5 billion in federal grants for FQHCs over the next two years. Many FQHCs plan to use the money to implement Electronic Health Records as a way of improving patient safety by sharing critical information with other community healthcare providers, improving chronic disease management, and reducing costs from duplicate tests and procedures.
"We expect that the Allscripts Health Center Solution will significantly improve clinical quality by helping our providers track the care of each patient to make sure that they are receiving the preventive and chronic care services that they need," said Chana Amsel, Chief Fiscal Officer of Community Medical & Dental Care. "We also anticipate that the new billing system will help us maintain a more predictable cash flow by automating the preparation of claims in the many different formats that our payers require."
As part of the Allscripts Health Center Solution, Community Medical & Dental Care will implement EHR and revenue cycle solutions from Allscripts, including practice management and claims processing. This will enable the clinic to verify a patient's insurance eligibility in real-time, and to view the result in the schedule and other relevant areas of the practice management system.
"By letting us verify the insurance eligibility of our patients online at the push of a button, Allscripts delivers a significant enhancement that will help us avoid visits for which we would not be reimbursed," said Amsel.
A Single Record; Automated Reports for FQHC
Community Medical & Dental Care, a multispecialty group, has two offices in Monsey and a mobile site, with some patients present at multiple sites. This creates difficulties for the clinicians, because the clinic's paper charts are available only at the site where each patient's personal physician works. Allscripts will provide a single electronic record that is available everywhere. In addition, abnormal lab results will be instantly forwarded to physicians so they can immediately inform their patients.
The community clinic selected Allscripts in part for the EHR's pre-built templates of physician progress notes for diverse specialties, including internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, dentistry, ob/gyn, dermatology, ophthalmology, endocrinology, nutrition, allergy, and immunology. But the most important factor in the clinic's decision was the ability of the Allscripts solution to quickly and automatically produce the reports that federal and state governments, and private foundations, require of FQHCs.
"We were looking for a solution that could handle the FQHC environment, and the reporting capabilities were the key," said Mendel Hoffman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Community Medical & Dental Care. "For Medicare and other government agencies, we have to provide reports on many dimensions of care, including state and federal quality measures and a variety of socio-economic parameters. It's a high level of detail, and we need a system like Allscripts that not only can meet that standard today but which will be able to quickly make product adjustments to future changes in the FQHC requirements."
Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts, commented, "Federally qualified health centers like Community Medical and Dental play a key role in lowering our nation's healthcare costs by providing low-cost medical and dental care for underserved populations who would otherwise end up in hospital Emergency Rooms. Whether it's meeting the demanding FQHC reporting requirements, calculating sliding scale fees, or providing medical and dental templates based on best-practice guidelines, we will provide the solutions that help FQHCs and other community health centers thrive."
What Other FQHCs Are Saying
The Allscripts Health Center Solution has become a clear favorite of FQHCs across the country. Not only does the Allscripts solution enhance a clinic's efficiency and deliver cost savings, it helps to improve the patient experience and clinical outcomes through more effective risk management, streamlined patient communication and education.
The Lone Star Family Health Center in Conroe, Texas, for instance, has saved $50,000 a year in transcription costs since implementing the Allscripts solution. The Crystal Lake Health Center in Benzonia, Mich. eliminated the need for eight medical record clerks, saving over $250,000 per year.
Delaware Health Net, which operates three FQHCs in Delaware, also has achieved significant business improvements since adopting the Allscripts solution, including a 90 percent decrease in claims denials, and 25 percent fewer days in Accounts Receivable. The 25-physician group also was able to drive their care standards even higher than the robust requirements set for FQHCs.
"The system really helps physicians to get the most out of their time with a patient," said Craig Law, Delaware Health Net's Chief Executive Officer. "The EHR presents a perfect snapshot of the patient's history. Every screen is set to match the flow of how our doctors prefer to work."
Law added, "We chose Allscripts because we liked the stability of the company and because it has an exceptionally high adoption rate by physicians. There are other companies, but we wanted a system that our physicians embraced—and that's where Allscripts pulled ahead."
