The Facebook-based rivalry competition, which includes 165 participating colleges and universities and is an element of this year's College Colors Day celebration, kicks off August 12 and runs through August 29. Fans are encouraged to pledge each day and can monitor national, as well as conference rankings.
The winning institution will be crowned winner of the College Colors Day Spirit Cup and will receive $10,000 toward its general scholarship fund. Last year's College Colors Day marked the first-ever Spirit Cup award, with The Pennsylvania State University serving as the official winner of the competition.
As college football surges in popularity, College Colors Day is an annual celebration dedicated to promoting the traditions and spirit that embody the college experience by encouraging fans across America to wear their favorite college or university apparel throughout the day on Friday, August 30. In 2012, 49 million fans attended college football games, which more than doubles the largest season-long total live attendance of the next most popular sport. Additionally, a college football game was the most-watched sporting event on cable television in 2012, and college games were the number one or number two rated Saturday primetime program for 14 consecutive weeks in the 2012 season.
"We are excited to celebrate college sports fans' passion and enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming college football season with the College Colors Day Spirit Cup," said Catherine Gammon, Senior Vice President of Brand Development, Collegiate Licensing Company, LLC. "We encourage all fans to pledge and spread the word with fellow fans to ensure their favorite school is crowned the winner of the College Colors Day Spirit Cup."
In order to determine which school has the most loyal fan base, college football's 173 million fans are encouraged to visit facebook.com/collegecolorsday to pledge for their favorite college or university. After placing a pledge, fans will have the opportunity to win prizes and discounts through an instant win game, view and submit photos to the College Colors Day fan photo gallery, and download a custom Facebook cover photo promoting their school for College Colors Day.
