City Sports Raises $10K for Tufts Medical Center Breast Cancer Research Fund
Specialty athletic retailer enlists Facebook community to bolster awareness, funds for local hospital
BOSTON, Nov. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- City Sports today announced that it has raised $10,000 to benefit the Tufts Medical Center Breast Cancer Research Fund, the result of a successful October social media campaign which generated awareness for the cause via the brand's official Facebook page.
"The core of our brand has always been to promote an active lifestyle, which is something we often take for granted when we have our health," said City Sports President and CEO Jeff Connor. "City Sports is committed to supporting the medical research community at Tufts Medical Center, who fight for those battling life-threatening illnesses, and we are humbled by the generosity of our Facebook following that made this charitable effort a success."
The Facebook-hosted campaign, held by City Sports throughout October for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, ran as a company-sponsored sweepstakes that pledged to donate one dollar to the Tufts Medical Center for Breast Cancer Research Fund for each entry. The winner received head-to-toe apparel from the CS by City Sports line, the brand's private label collection that re-launched earlier this year.
"We would like to thank City Sports for their generous donation, and for championing this important cause during Breast Cancer Awareness month," said John K. Erban, MD, Clinical Director and Associate Director for Clinical Science at Tufts Medical Center's Cancer Center. "Every year, over 200,000 women and several thousand men are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, but fortunately, groundbreaking research over the past decade has significantly improved the chance of long-term survival. Continued support from generous donors like City Sports raises the likelihood that we will ultimately find a cure for most, if not all women diagnosed with breast cancer. This donation supports breast cancer research at Tufts Medical Center, and will help us in our fight against this most important public health problem."
