WASHINGTON, March 16, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- National League of Cities (NLC) President Melodee Colbert-Kean, councilmember, Joplin, Mo. issued the following statement regarding the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court:
"When our residents need a job done, our cities' leaders don't have the option to sit on our hands and do nothing. We can't afford to wait for the next election to handle the critical issues we face every day.
"Under the U.S. Constitution, the president has a duty to nominate an individual to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court of the United States, and the Senate has a duty to consider that nomination. The president has announced that he will do his part today. We expect the Senate to do their part in a timely manner.
"This year, the Supreme Court will decide on a number of issues that will affect cities and their residents. We need the Court to be complete and fully-functioning as they consider these issues."
