CITGO Lemont Refinery Employees Educate Students About Petroleum Refining

LEMONT, Ill., Feb. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- CITGO Lemont Refinery employees recently visited Old Quarry Middle School to present information on the refining process, environmental stewardship and career opportunities within the petroleum industry to more than 300 eighth-grade students. 

"We can always count on the local CITGO employees for classroom support," said Shiqipe Osmani, eighth-grade science teacher at Old Quarry Middle School.  "For the past seven years, CITGO employees have been donating their time and talents to help educate our students about the science of refining crude oil and to inspire them to become our next generation of environmental stewards and innovators. Education is truly enhanced when outside resources are available to enrich the curriculum and expose students to real world science. We are thankful for all that CITGO does for us." 

On January 17, CITGO Lemont Refinery employees Jim Lant, Air Compliance Programs Coordinator, and Brian Rimbo, Emergency Planning and Response Manager, met with students to discuss their real world experience with environmental protection, personal lab safety, health, chemistry and engineering. During the presentation, students participated in interactive demonstrations and experiments and received environmentally-friendly flashlights courtesy of CITGO. 

CITGO employees established this program in 2007 as a career-education initiative designed to supplement the science curriculum and stimulate interest in future science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-related careers for eighth-grade students. The program provides practical, interactive experiences guided by CITGO professionals designed to help students understand the science of refining and the important functions the company provides to the community.

CITGO encourages new learning opportunities that challenge students and help them understand the role of science in their lives today and the impact science will have in their future. In 2013, CITGO Lemont Refinery employees participated in several science programs, including Project Infinite Green and Homer Junior High School's Annual Science Fair. This year, CITGO continues its efforts to educate students about the importance of science, while raising awareness of career opportunities. 

The CITGO Lemont Refinery employs more than 800 local residents on a full-time and contract basis in support of the local economy.  In addition to producing high quality fuels for a large portion of the network of nearly 6,000 locally-owned CITGO stations across the country, Lemont refinery employees also make a major positive impact on the community.  Each year, more than 2,500 volunteer hours and thousands of dollars are given in support of community programs such as Muscular Dystrophy Association, United Way and a variety of environmental, education and preservation programs.
