MIAMI, Nov. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Quality reading time with a child is a simple activity that can be difficult for many of the 1.3 million currently serving military members. Many of those members are serving away from their child's grandparents and extended family. In honor of Veteran's Day and the sacrifices made by military families to keep our country safe, Caribu is donating free six-month subscriptions of the app throughout the month of November.
Caribu wants to make it easier for the 50% of military families with children to spend quality time through their interactive video calling app that helps parents and grandparents read and draw with children when they're not in the same location - a perfect tech application for military families.
Caribu's founding was inspired by a picture of a soldier holding up a book to a webcam as he tried to read it to his daughter. It was baffling to the Caribu team that no one had thought of how to solve the simple problem of how to enjoy a bedtime story with a child when far away.
"We saw the picture of the soldier and thought, this is unacceptable," said Maxeme Tuchman, Caribu C.E.O. "In this day and age, how do we have military service members serving our country and keeping our families safe and we don't have better technology to help them stay connected to their family in a more engaging way?"
No more holding up books to webcams—military families will instead get access to Caribu's library of hundreds of digital storybooks, workbooks, and language books. Caribu offers more than just books — they recognize the importance drawing also has in a child's development and engagement.
A.T. is in the Air Force, and after 11.5 months of deployment he's ready to head home and see his family in person. About halfway through his deployment A.T. found out about Caribu from an article that was written in the Stars and Stripes newspaper that circulates on base.
Before he found Caribu he and his family relied on video-calls and social media to stay in touch. Even though regular video-calls are an option there are challenges that come with only using them to stay connected, he said "In a regular video-call I can't read to him. I never really planned ahead that well with physical books so reading was impossible in the traditional video-chat platform."
The ease of communication is not the only way Caribu has made connecting easy, A.T told us that his son loves the books and has positively impacted his relationship with his son, saying that, "It's been helpful to have useful engagements with my son and by reading to him and having that connection it's enhanced my quality time with him."
In just a few years, there are a lot of accomplishments for the young company. With books from over 20 publishers, the company has been featured in an Apple iPad TV commercial and has been recognized by Forbes as an EdTech company "to watch." Even though Caribu has families reading together in 148 countries, nothing would make them prouder than being able to make an impact on the lives of the military families that inspired their journey.
Caribu is available on iPad and iPhone as a free download and comes with free content to get started right away. An unlimited content subscription is available for $6.99/mo. Android and web versions are coming soon. To learn more about the campaign and to sign up, please visit caribu.co/military.
