Care4life, a new mobile approach to diabetes education and support, is now available for a free trial to health plans and health delivery networks
WASHINGTON, Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- From the company that launched text4baby(SM), the nation's largest mobile health initiative, Voxiva, Inc. announces the broad availability of care4life(SM), a mobile-based interactive approach to diabetes education and support.
After nearly 4 years of development and testing, care4life is now available for people with type 2 diabetes in the United States. For the remainder of 2012, Voxiva is offering qualifying health plans and provider networks the opportunity to enroll their members at no charge, giving both the organization and the user the opportunity to gain experience with the program. "Care4life will revolutionize diabetes education and support," according to Voxiva CEO, Justin Sims. Using a combination of text messaging, a mobile app and a personalized on-line web portal, care4life provides the participant with daily education, encouragement and support. "Since 99% of text messages are read and over 90% are read within 3 minutes, we know that this channel is effective in its ability to pace the delivery of education and reinforce desired behaviors on an ongoing basis," said Sims, "numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of mobile communications in improving diabetes self-management; we know this works and will make people healthier."
Care4life is personalized to a patient's profile to help people with type 2 diabetes take better control of their condition. The program focuses on education and adherence to the participant's treatment protocol. It also allows participants to build an electronic record of blood glucose readings, blood pressure, weight and exercise that they can view on-line and share with their providers. Care4life is available in English and Spanish.
Care4life content was developed by Theresa Garnero, APRN, BC-ADM, MSN, CDE, author of "Your First Year With Diabetes" and 2004 Diabetes Educator of the Year. "It is the daily reinforcement that is so unique about care4life," according to Garnero. "Interactive text messaging, combined with an online log that is built one text message at a time, will reinforce the guidance provided by the patient's educator and care team."
Care4life is currently being evaluated at HealthInsight, a multispecialty care delivery network within the Utah Beacon community. Korey Capozza, Consumer Engagement Director at HealthInsight is leading the research in partnership with a number of health care providers in Utah. In a recent article about care4life, Capozza says, "In our experience patients connect with the program for the same reasons that so many people hire personal trainers." According to Capozza, "in essence it is a low cost pocket health coach." In fact, HealthInsight is already seeing positive results. Care4life helped one user in Utah bring his dangerously high blood glucose levels under control. In describing his success with the program he said, "to see my progress in these tools was a motivator. To submit my information to care4life and have it reply back and say, 'Keep up the good work!' — that was a motivator too."
