CABOT, Vt., Nov. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday, Patricia Schroedl of Jefferson, Wis. took the big cheese! Cabot Creamery Cooperative, widely known as "Makers of the World's Best Cheddar," named Patricia Schroedl as the winner of the Cabot Farmers' Legacy Recipe Competition, the nationwide search for the most delicious family legacy recipe that incorporates the Cabot Farmers' Legacy Collection. The contest culminated with three finalists from across the country competing in the kitchen to showcase their traditional family recipes. This November, Cabot invited the finalists to Boston where they prepared recipes that have been handed down through their families. With her White Oak Cheddar, Prosciutto and Grilled Pineapple Flatbreads with Arugula Salad recipe, Patricia won the judges' hearts and earned the distinction of the Cabot Farmers' Legacy Recipe Competition Winner.
"A family's legacy is shaped in the kitchen, and the recipes shared with us as part of this contest have such great meaning, with many having been passed down from grandmother to granddaughter or from father to son," said Dr. Richard Stammer, president and CEO of Cabot Creamery. "We at Cabot are honored to have our products showcased as part of these recipes—as family heritage is a key ingredient to who we are as a farmer-owned cooperative."
The national competition invited families across the nation to honor their legacy family recipes with Cabot Farmers' Legacy Collection cheese, a new collection of three premium aged cheddars. Of the more than 150 national submissions, 30 semifinalists were chosen and then narrowed down to three finalists who competed in Boston and shared each of their family's traditional recipes with Cabot. Patricia, who topped the competition, will enjoy a $5,000 check as well as a $5,000 donation that Cabot will make in her name to the Humane Society of Jefferson County. The Humane Society of Jefferson County's mission is to care for the lost, homeless and abused animals of Jefferson County, help place them in forever homes, and work to inspire kinder and more humane communities.
The runner-up of the competition was Emily Paster of River Forest, IL. who won a ski trip to Smugglers Notch Vermont®, while Chitra Agrawal of Brooklyn, N.Y. won a trip to the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont.

"These cheeses are about family," said Chef Rich Vellante, one of the five judges of the competition. "The Farmers' Legacy Collection celebrates Cabot farm families as well as anyone who loves spending time with family in the kitchen cooking classic family meals and recipes."
Five Boston-area judges including Legal Sea Foods Executive Chef Rich Vellante, Rachel Blumenthal of Eater Boston, Blogger Steve Garfield, Food Stylist Sunny Ricks and Cabot farmer Marlow Duffy chose the winner based on specific criteria with a focus on taste, use of Farmers' Legacy Collection and appearance of final presentation.
The Cabot Farmers' Legacy Collection was developed to honor Cabot's 1,200 local farm families across New England and to celebrate their commitment to working together—many for generations—to provide nutritious dairy products in a way that makes the earth and its people economically, environmentally and socially better, now and for future generations. The collection of premium aged cheddars feature unique flavor profiles with the distinct sharpness obtained by natural aging and are available to shoppers in the dairy aisle of the grocery store in the three varieties: Cabot Farmhouse Reserve, Cabot White Oak Cheddar and Cabot Alpine Cheddar.
