An all too common experience of our country's sheltered animals is BOTH the imminent and (the senseless) DEATH; the END of life for many of the creatures we call man's best friends. Approximately 3 to 4 million healthy and treatable dogs and cats are KILLED in OUR animal shelters each year. That equates to more than 9,500 healthy dogs and cats killed every day of the week, 365 days of the year. How can we, a so-called civilized country have such little regard for our helpless animal companions? "This does not have to be," says Nathan Winograd of the No Kill Advocacy Center and thousands of the NO KILL movement activists in states across the nation and across the world.
Communities all across the United States are embracing a formula called the NO Kill Equation, which NO KILL advocates say is THE solution to ending the KILLINGS of the millions of lives in our animal shelters. Many of the communities that have embraced The No Kill Equation have experienced tremendous results. For instance, The Nevada Humane Society, in their first year of implementing the NO KILL Equation, the NHS reported the number of dogs and cats KILLED declined 51% in dogs and 52% in cats. Today they are at a 90% save rate for dogs and 91% save rate for cats -- a remarkable improvement!
On October 9, 2010, "BUILDING A NO KILL SOUTH FLORIDA" presented by NO KILL Nation is coming to the Broward County Convention Center in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The event will be the first gathering of its size in Florida; animal rescue activists, shelter officials, local government representatives, veterinarians, dog and cat club members, animal lawyers, trainers, groomers, and other animal lovers together along with the nation's most widely recognized leaders of the No Kill movement under one roof. The purpose of this event is to share information and proven techniques that can be utilized to help save lives of sheltered pets in south Florida and the nation.
The Director of the No Kill Advocacy Center, Nathan Winograd is the featured speaker along with other NO KILL advocates, Mike Fry, Mitch Schneider, Dr. Linda Wolf and Bonney Brown. Speakers are scheduled to speak on a variety of topics including: programs and service that make NO KILL possible, Feral cats: multiple approaches to the solution, expanding adoption programs, A win-win approach to "animal control" and Litigation and legislation for change.
If every shelter did as well as communities that have embraced the NO KILL philosophy, we would save as many as 3.8 million of the 4 million dogs and cats that are scheduled to be killed in U.S. shelters this year. It is not an impossible dream. For, at the end of the day, the power to change the status quo is in our hands.
This is South Florida's opportunity to embrace "the movement that is sweeping across the U.S. in the noble battle for the heart and soul of our nation's animal shelters – a battle we are winning and we will WIN!" says Nathan Winograd.
