Brown & Toland Reports Strong Financial Results for 2009
SAN FRANCISCO, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Brown & Toland announced today a strong financial performance in 2009, with an operating income of $15.5 million before physician bonuses and taxes on a total revenue of $239.1 million. Brown & Toland remains one of California's most financially successful and stable independent practice associations (IPAs), posting strong earnings for 10 consecutive years.
In 2010, Brown & Toland will distribute $10.3 million in physician bonuses. Additionally, in 2009 Brown & Toland adjusted its physician compensation schedule resulting in additional payments of $5.2 million to Brown & Toland physicians last year.
"We are very proud of the fact that we were able to execute our strategies and continue to provide additional services to our physicians," said Gloria Austin, Brown & Toland's Chief Executive Officer. "We had a very active year in 2009, negotiating new relationships with our primary hospital partners and beginning discussions with Alta Bates Medical Group to provide management services to their doctors. Additionally, we continued to deploy the electronic health record to our physician offices, bringing efficiencies to those offices and helping these doctors provide quality care."
At the end of 2009, close to 500 Brown & Toland physicians and their staff were using the clinical results reporting (CRR) component of the electronic health record. This part of the electronic health record provides Brown & Toland physicians with more than 52.6 million individual clinical results and has the capability to significantly reduce duplicate testing.
For the third year in a row, Brown & Toland was named an "elite" medical group in the Standards of Excellence Survey by the California Association of Physician Groups (CAPG). More than 80 medical groups, which care for 10.8 million HMO patients, participated in the survey. The program recognizes quality in four areas: care management; health information technology; patient-centered care; and accountability and transparency.
"The Board of Directors and senior management team has a strong plan in place to position our physicians and our medical group for success," said Neal Birnbuam, M.D., Brown & Toland's Chairman of the Board. "We know that challenges lie ahead, but we are confident in our future."
