British International School Chicago, South Loop Students Tackle Local Issues On A Global Scale At The United Nations
CHICAGO, July 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --Students Maddie An and Theo Keonig, Year 13 students from the British International School of Chicago, South Loop (BISC South Loop), a Nord Anglia Education school, presented solutions to address the Global Goals at a special side event of the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York on July 14. The event was co-hosted by the governments of Malaysia, Argentina and Bulgaria, together with UNICEF, Project Everyone and Nord Anglia Education. An and Keonig were part of a student delegation that addressed representatives of governments, the UN, UNICEF, the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson, and Executive Director of UNICEF, Anthony Lake.
As part of the challenge, students pitched solutions for Goals 2 and 3 -- Zero Hunger and Good Health and Well-Being respectively. The action plan that An and Koenig developed focused efforts on ending hunger in Chicago by redistributing food that is nearing the sell-by date from areas of plentiful supply to areas of need. Along with each pack of recovered food, students designed a leaflet that describes the importance of making healthy food choices.
Students will work with Top Box Foods, a non-profit that produces healthy and affordable grocery boxes for people living in food-insecure neighborhoods. They also contacted other local organizations to help identify potential food recovery locations and partner agencies. Once food recovery begins, the students will volunteer with Top Box Foods to add leaflets to food packs that describe the importance of healthy eating.
"Through the Global Challenge and the World's Largest Lesson, Nord Anglia Education aims to develop an awareness within the student body about the world in which they live as well as inspiring us to take a bigger role in helping the communities around us," said Koenig in the video proposal presented to UNICEF.
Headmaster Mike Horton said, "We are delighted to see students imagine and implement meaningful change for people in our community. The Global Challenge is providing a fantastic opportunity to take positive action right here in Chicago, with guidance from a global organization focused on humanitarian efforts."
The Global Challenge to raise awareness of the Global Goals launched in February 2017. Students from Nord Anglia's 44 international schools around the world helped to bring their communities one step closer to ending extreme poverty, inequality and climate change using the World's Largest Lesson, an initiative co-led by UNICEF.
