WILTON, Conn., Feb. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Blue Buffalo Foundation for Cancer Research's Pet Cancer Awareness Campaign is pleased to have been named a finalist in contention for a Cause Marketing Halo Award in the BEST ENVIRO OR ANIMAL Campaign Category.
Blue Buffalo and Petco teamed up this past May for their 5th Annual Pet Cancer Awareness Month in hopes of raising money to benefit pet cancer research and the families affected by this disease. Cancer will affect one out of every four dogs in the U.S., and of those, more than half will die from the disease. In fact, cancer is the number one disease-related cause of death in both dogs and cats, according to Morris Animal Foundation, a world leader in advancing veterinary research. About eighty percent of pet parents know little to nothing about pet cancer symptoms.
Throughout Pet Cancer Awareness Month in May, pet lovers were able to help Blue Buffalo and Petco aim for a cure. During that time, these pet lovers donated to the Petco Foundation at Petco stores across the country. In addition, for each bag of Blue Buffalo dog or cat food purchased, one dollar was donated to organizations such as the Morris Animal Foundation and others that support pet cancer research. Money raised funded efforts like the Morris Animal Foundation's 5-5-5 Initiative, which is conducting five annual clinical trials on osteosarcoma, the most common form of bone cancer in dogs, and a form of cancer that also affects human children. Funds were also distributed to universities and clinics across the country that are conducting research on the causes, prevention and treatment of canine and feline cancer, as well as to various organizations that are dedicated to helping families in need cover the cost of cancer treatments. Donations can also be made year-round online at petcancerawareness.org. To date the Pet Cancer Awareness Campaign has raised over $7 million for these causes.
"Each year, as cause-related marketing gets more sophisticated, we receive an increasing number of strong submissions into the Halo Awards. Being named a finalist is an industry honor and demonstrates a level of accomplishment in campaigns that combine purpose and profit," said Cause Marketing Forum President David Hessekiel.
The awards recognize excellence in North American cause marketing campaigns. 2015 marks the 13th year that the Cause Marketing Forum will honor businesses and nonprofits with Halos for doing well by doing good.
A total of 16 category awards will be given out to programs judged the best cause marketing campaigns of 2014 at the 13th Annual Cause Marketing Forum Conference in Chicago on May 28, 2015.
