COLUMBUS, Ga., July 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Aflac, the number one provider of supplemental insurance in the United States, serving more than 466,000 employers across the nation and protecting more than 50 million people worldwide, has been named one of Black Enterprise magazine's 40 Best Companies for Diversity for the eighth time. Aflac is one of only two insurance providers to appear on the prestigious list every year since it was created. Companies are honored annually for demonstrating a commitment to diversity in one or more of four key areas: board of directors, employee base, senior management and supplier diversity.
"We have long held the belief that our diversity is a large part of what makes Aflac the leader in the supplemental insurance industry," Aflac Chairman and CEO Dan Amos said. "Our products benefit people of all backgrounds, so it makes strong business sense to maintain a workforce that represents the great diversity of our nation. It is also the right thing to do."
Aflac received particularly high ratings for its diverse employee base and the percentage of senior management positions held by African Americans and members of other ethnic groups. More than 39 percent of Aflac's workforce is composed of minorities, including 33 percent who are African Americans. More than 22 percent of Aflac's senior management (supervisor or higher) is composed of individuals representing minority ethnic groups.
To compile the 2012 list, Black Enterprise sent surveys to the top 1,000 publicly traded companies as well as the 100 leading global companies with strong U.S. operations. Black Enterprise's survey focused on activities related to the participation of African Americans and members of other ethnic minority groups. Based on the analysis, each company was given a score per category, which was compiled into a final survey score, with a heavier weighting applied to scores in the senior management and supplier diversity categories.
