Bayer Corporation Donates $100,000 to the American Red Cross to Support Disaster and Emergency Preparedness
PITTSBURGH, Aug. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bayer Corporation today announced a $100,000 donation to the American Red Cross to support the organization's national disaster and emergency preparedness efforts across the United States.
"Bayer has been a long-time supporter of the important work of the American Red Cross," said Bayer Corporation President Philip Blake. "This donation is our way of helping the American Red Cross prepare and protect communities, including those in which our employees live and work, in the unfortunate event of a natural disaster or emergency. Both Bayer Corporation and the American Red Cross work each day to solve problems and improve the lives of Americans."
The mission of the American Red Cross is to alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. When a disaster strikes, the American Red Cross must be ready to provide food, shelter, direct financial assistance, emotional support and assistance for long-term recovery. In preparation for disasters, the Red Cross offers community education, health and safety courses, as well as identifies facilities and partners with the capacity to provide disaster-related services. The organization also addresses community issues and the needs of special populations, and trains volunteers to provide individual and mass care. Bayer Corporation and the Bayer USA Foundation have supported the American Red Cross for 13 years.
"Bayer Corporation's generous gift will allow us to educate more individuals in Red Cross preparedness and safety programs," said Patricia M. Waldinger, regional chief executive officer of the Western Pennsylvania Region of the American Red Cross. "Even though we have made tremendous progress, far too many individuals still are not prepared for major disasters."
The $100,000 donation will support natural disaster and emergency preparedness programs such as Be Red Cross Ready, which details three key preparedness actions (build a kit, make a plan, be informed), fire safety programs, and programs for seniors.
"Preparedness training not only reduces the impact of disasters on lives and property, it can also reduce costs associated with the recovery efforts following a major disaster such as a hurricane, tornado, flood, earthquake or fire," Waldinger added. "We are most grateful to Bayer Corporation for its generous gift."
