Barona Band Of Mission Indians Awards MAAC Community Charter School A $5,000 Grant To Upgrade Science Resources
Barona Education Grant program has awarded $3.2 million to schools statewide
SAN DIEGO, Nov. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Barona Band of Mission Indians has awarded students and teachers at MAAC Community Charter School, located in Chula Vista, a $5,000 Barona Education Grant to purchase to new science materials. The school is part of the Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee on Anti-Poverty (MAAC) that was established by leaders of San Diego's Mexican American community. The school was founded in 2001 in response to the increasing need for a supportive, alternative learning environment to help struggling students gain self-confidence, embrace learning and earn a high school diploma.
"I am extremely proud of the students and staff of MAAC Community Charter School, who demonstrate every day the power of education and its role in breaking the cycle of poverty," said State Senator Ben Hueso. "This generous grant from the Barona Band of Mission Indians will help the school enhance its science program by providing supplies and materials that promote academic excellence."
Barona Tribal Chairman Edwin "Thorpe" Romero presented the $5,000 check to Principal Tommy Ramirez and students.
"Our Tribe is proud to provide the funds to ensure that the more than 300 students at MAAC Community Charter School have access to the latest science-focused learning resources available," said Chairman Romero. "The study of science opens up young minds to a world of exploration, discovery and invention. We hope these materials inspire this next generation of critical thinkers."
Teachers will use the grant money to buy 35 Core Connections Integrated 1 Books, 35 Core Connections Integrated 2 Books, 1 Teacher Bundle for Level 1, Teacher Bundle for Level 2 and 1 3B Human Brain Model
Since the Barona Education Grant program was launched in 2006, Barona has awarded over $3.2 million to California schools statewide. The program has equipped 641 schools with hundreds of computers, thousands of books, iPads, computer software programs and various other technologies and school supplies.
The Barona Education Grant program is the first of its kind in California created and administered by a Tribal Government. The goal of the program is to create strong educational opportunities for the children of California building upon the success of the Barona Indian Charter School, which operates under a continuous improvement model. Schools throughout California can apply for educational grants from Barona to purchase much-needed supplies and materials that promote academic improvement.
